Downtown gives you the postcard version. The side streets give you the actual city. Pilsen packs murals and some of the best Mexican food in the country into a short L ride from the Loop. Wicker Park is record stores, cocktail bars and vintage shops stacked along a few blocks. Hyde Park holds two serious museums and a quiet stretch of lakefront. Andersonville is one long street of independent bookshops and bakeries. Pick one per trip, give it an afternoon, and take the train there.
One day means the Loop, the riverwalk and one museum, walked fast. It can be done, but you will spend the evening regretting the pace. Two days is where the trip starts to breathe: downtown the first day, then the lakefront and one outlying neighborhood the second. A third day adds a river cruise, a ballgame or a slow morning at the Art Institute without anything getting cut. With four or five you can reach Hyde Park properly, cross into Oak Park for the architecture, or leave the state entirely for an afternoon.
Where you sleep decides how much of your day you spend on a train. The Loop and River North put the river, the lakefront and the Magnificent Mile within walking distance of each other. The West Loop trades that walkability for the restaurant blocks of Fulton Market, with a short ride back to downtown at night.

Skip the rental counter. Chicago is a transit city, and downtown parking will cost more per hour than most museum tickets. The L and the buses run on one fare system, and transfers within a window cost nothing extra, so a day of hopping between the river, the Museum Campus and Lincoln Park costs very little. The trains are elevated through the Loop, which means the ride itself doubles as a sightseeing tour. From O'Hare the Blue Line runs straight into the city, and from Midway the Orange Line does the same. Both airport runs are slow with luggage at rush hour, so check a transit app before you commit. If you stay near a train station, you will not open a rideshare app more than once or twice.
Chicago makes more sense drawn than listed. The streets run on a flat grid, the lake sits to the east, and nearly everything worth seeing clusters near the river or the shoreline. Plot the stops on a real map before you book anything and the geography sorts itself out in a minute.
Wind decides your day here more than rain does. A calm morning makes an open boat trip and a pier walk feel effortless; a gusty one turns the lakefront into something you endure rather than enjoy. Check the conditions at the shore, not at the airport, before you lock in a deck ticket or a bike ride up the path.
